Kinderhotel – Austria

We had heard about Kinderhotels and, after a bit of research, we found Kinderhotel Buchau, which had great reviews, so we decided to book for a week in September after the schools had returned and the weather had cooled slightly.

We had a busy morning finishing our packing and getting the girls ready for the long journey.  Somehow we managed to get all of our luggage and a buggy in to our car along with the four of us – I’m still not sure how we did it but, somehow, we were on our way on time and the drive out to Heathrow was really quick and the traffic was forgiving.  I had heard about GoodToGo parking at Heathrow which sells official Heathrow parking but at discounted prices, so long as you park over a Saturday night.  This was our first experience of driving to the airport so I wasn’t sure what to expect but their Meet & Greet service was excellent and we were soon on our way on the very short walk to the check in desks.  I had really wanted to book the driverless pods at Heathrow but they were unfortunately fully booked – with the girls I think that is something I will try for next time.

I had managed to snag some Avios reward seats and so we were able to make use of the quicker check in desks and fast track security.  We were all through security and up to the lounge very quickly.  Now, airport lounges are usually an oasis of calm (and champagne) but with two small children I was introduced to the “Kids Room” concept.  It was a room with brightly coloured soft furnishings, a few games consoles, a large screen TV, some high chairs and a small selection of drinks and snacks.  Not great but not bad either and at least we had the place to ourselves.  we settled the girls down and I went to find food and drinks for us all.

Isla was enjoying all the options of food and drink (asking for various things and turning her nose up at others) while Ella was being very good and sitting quietly.  Matt & I had agreed to look after a child each and, since my child (Ella) was being good, I decided not to break the habit of lifetime and enjoy a small glass of champagne pre-flight.

IMG_8273

When our flight was called we gathered up our gang and made our way to the aeroplane.  This was the first time Isla was old enough to understand that we would be flying and I was excited to see how she coped with it all.  As always, she seemed to take it all in her stride and laughed and looked out of the window as we accelerated down the runway and took to the air.

Once we were airborne, and the meals were served, she settled down to watch Paddington and generally seemed unfazed by the whole experience.

GEEH0010

Ella was sadly not so good and fidgeted and struggled for a lot of the flight, thankfully she fell asleep for about 30mins as the meals and drinks were served but then she awoke and continued her fidgeting and loud babbling.

IMG_8286

The cabin crew were amazing and went out of their way to look after us and make us feel at ease.  The flight passed quickly and we were soon landing at Innsbruck.  We were through security quickly as it was a small airport and not very busy.  However, Isla became a nightmare as we had to queue for passport control and then for baggage reclaim.  I was glad to eventually get her in to the Taxi and in to the child seat restraints.  The hotel had organised the transfer for us and they had provided child and baby seats.  Both girls fell fast asleep as we made the 40mins transfer to the hotel.

When we arrived we were given a warm welcome and a tour of the hotel and the facilities.  The hotel is set up to cater for children throughout and it was fabulous.

At reception there was a set of little steps for the children to talk to the receptionists.

IMG_8399.JPG

Throughout the rest of the hotel there are many child and family friendly additions.  For example there is a Laundry room with washing machines and dryers (powder is available from the reception); buggies and trailers are available for your use throughout your stay; a 24hr baby room is situated just off the min restaurant and is full of milk, fridges and microwaves; a baby food buffet is part of the main restaurant and includes all types of baby food from milk up to 12m+ jars along with fresh fruit & vegetables for use alone or via the adjacent juicing machine; a baby change room just off the main restaurant complete with wipes and nappy bins; an adventure playground outside with balance bikes, go-karts and huge pirate ship in a sandpit; soft play; heated outdoor swimming pool; outdoor swimming lake; heated indoor swimming pool; jacuzzi; separate baby pool room (with slides and toys); a waterslide; fridges of bottled still and sparkling water throughout the hotel; table tennis; rock climbing wall; play areas off the main bar; gym; spa and multiple steam & sauna rooms (plus many more I have not mentioned)

After the tour we went up to our room to unpack.  The room was also set up well for children with a change table already in the room (complete with wipes, baby wash and baby moisturiser) bunk beds and a cot in a separate room for the girls, steps and toilet seat attachments in the bathroom, a kettle, bottle warmer, and a beach bag containing robes and slippers for the whole family.

We had an early dinner while we reviewed the activity programme for the following week and decided what we would like to try – we settled on a few exercise classes, a few relaxation classes, a ‘tryout climbing’ class, Nordic walking and a tree top zip-line experience (like GoApe).  The hotel runs on an all inclusive basis, and alcohol was included, so we enjoyed a lovely drink with dinner as we looked out over the mountains and lake.  Isla had her own children’s buffet to choose from (everything at child height, including the drinks dispensers, along with plastic cup and plates, children’s cutlery and stacks of bibs everywhere there was food) and the adults dined from a specially prepared menu, which was delivered to your table by the waiting staff, along with salad bar, dessert buffet and huge selection of breads, cheese and chutneys – the food was absolutely amazing and, more importantly, healthy. There was an open kitchen where you could see the chefs preparing meals and cakes throughout the day.

After dinner we took the girls up for bath and bedtime.  They were both very tired and quickly fell asleep.  I sent Matt down the bar to get us one final drink to enjoy quietly in our room.  It turned out that the cocktail list was in German and so he sent back a picture to me to choose from.

I could work out most of it but recognised the Hugo cocktail from a friend’s wedding in Italy a few years ago so I had my first one (of many) before bed.

IMG_8289

We all slept very well and the hotel was very quiet at night.  In the morning we went out on to our balcony and had a great view out over the lake and mountains.  We all had a fantastic breakfast (every option you could imagine) before using the best facility offered by the hotel – the Nursery! You book the children in for the hours you require and so we dropped the girls off at 10am after our breakfast.  Matt and I went and found some swinging chairs on the terrace and enjoyed some tea, coffee and freshly made cake as we overlooked the lake – there was absolute silence and no one requesting entertainment or food. Bliss.  The nursery have outdoor time each day and we watched as the girls were taken out in the group and then we watched as they returned 1.5hrs later.  They both seemed to be enjoyed themselves.

We decided to have our lunch on the terrace before heading back to the room for a nap – it was lovely to have some time together to just relax and chat about everything and anything.  In the afternoon we picked the girls up and then took them to the swimming pool.  The hotel has a separate water slide and an abundance of water rings to sit on and use on the slide – we had the slide completely to ourselves and we took it in turns to sit Isla on our lap and take her down.  She absolutely loved it  – every time we landed in the water at the bottom she would jump up and shout “again”! Ella enjoyed the baby pool which was about a foot deep and heated with a slide and lots of toys for grabbing and chewing.

Each day the hotel sets out freshly made cakes and snacks between 2 and 4pm (although there are other snacks and all drinks available throughout the day) and so we headed there after swimming for some drinks and food before baths/changing and going down to dinner.  Again, the girls were very tired and we all returned to the room for an early night.

The next day we booked the girls in to nursery again after breakfast and Matt and I attended one of the classes run by the hotel – a Stretch & Relax class.  The instructor’s english was not great but the class was good and we really felt a difference afterwards.  We then went to the gym for some exercise – the gym was very good and it had an amazing view out on to the lake and mountains.

IMG_8299.JPG

After lunch we had a walk down by the lake – it was quiet and the weather was being very good to us.  The scenery was breathtaking and Matt couldn’t resist a paddle.

After we collected the girls we went for more cake before heading down to the excellent soft play area in the hotel basement.  We had the place to ourselves and Matt got particularly excited when he discovered the airguns and soft balls (and realised the I was within range).

We then went out to the adventure playground and Isla enjoyed herself playing and spent ages on the trampolines and zip-lines.

IMG_8377IMG_8378

We returned to our room and got everyone ready for dinner before heading to the bar to try out the cocktails of the day (they also have cocktails of the day for the children – alcohol free for Isla).

MTVX7238

The next day we again put both girls in to nursery to allow us to exercise but then I collected Isla to take her to a special toddler class.  The hotel runs various classes for parents and children together and I was interested in the Montessori class which was aimed at helping toddlers to do things themselves and explore their growing independence.  Since Isla is trying every day to be more independent (and getting sometimes quite frustrated) I thought it would be a good choice.  I think Isla enjoyed herself and I learnt a lot about how to help her and encourage her.  I am aware that her world can sometimes be a flood of “no” and “stop that” so it is nice to think of new ways to guide her in different directs in a positive manner.

After the class we had a lovely lunch together before taking Isla back to the nursery and Matt and I used a couple of the hotel bikes for a ride around the lake and up to a local village – we stopped halfway for a relaxing drink overlooking the lake.  It was fantastic. IMG_8334.jpg

We then rode back to the hotel to collect the girls before going swimming again. Travelling with two small children we were always going to create a lot of washing so it was a good opportunity to go and use the hotel’s facilities to do a few washing loads.  There were washing machines, dryers and airers available and we could get powder from reception.  While the washing was on we went back out to the adventure playground and Isla exhausted herself playing on the trampoline again.  Ella fell asleep and so Matt took the opportunity to get us some drinks to enjoy as we relaxed on the one of the many sun loungers around the gardens and pool.

IMG_8386

We then made our way up to the room for baths and to get ready for dinner after which we again went to the bar to try the cocktails of the day (and ones for the children) before bedtime.

The next day we again used the nursery to allow Matt and I to go for a massage each.  I’m not sure if something got lost in translation or if was an Austrian specific technique but the massage was one of the best in my life (and I’ve had many, many massages during our trips to Thailand).  I felt completely relaxed (and a bit dizzy) after she had finished.  With a glow of relaxation and happiness I decided to go and explore the sauna/solarium which was completely empty and far more comprehensive than I had expected – although I wasn’t brave enough to try to ice cold dip pool out the back.

We had lunch and then collected the girls early to take them on a bike ride with us around the lake.  The hotel hires out all types of bike along with child friendly trailers.  We each loaded a girl in to a trailer and we set off for a lovely family cycle ride together.

We stopped off for some drinks at the same cafe overlooking the lake – this time the holiday buzz took hold and we ordered some beers and cake to enjoy along with the views.

IMG_8427IMG_8430

After a lovely time we set off back to the hotel and both girls fell fast asleep on the journey – at which point it occurred to us that shoulder straps would have been a good addition for Isla!

IMG_8353

We then took the girls for more cake and drinks in the hotel – we decided to let Ella try the cone from her sister’s ice cream and it went down a treat.

IMG_8436

After more playing in the adventure playground we all got ready for dinner and we decided to make use of another wonderful addition to the hotel childcare – dinner time nursery!  We dropped the girls off and then went for a drink, just the two of us, in the bar.  We were both deep in conversation when the nursery assistants came over to say they they were bringing the children down to a special nursery section of the restaurant for dinner and that we might want to disappear rather than let the girls see us – so we made our way to our table for a relaxing few hours of dinner alone – dinner where we actually talked to each other and could also hear the replies. We were feeling guilty but when we went to collect the girls later they were both absolutely fine and were enjoying watching German Paw Patrol.

The next day we were woken up to two big and smelly surprises from Ella (in quick succession) and so we needed to do a hot wash before breakfast (another moment when we appreciated the hotel’s facilities).  We had a great breakfast although I must admit that we succumbed to the constant requests from Isla and placated her with Nutella spread on rice cakes.  It worked well but we seem now to have created a fixation on Nutella which we had, up until this point, managed to avoid.  We then dropped the girls off at the nursery and went to enjoy some exercise in the gym, we again had it all to ourselves, before we showered and had a relaxed lunch on the terrace.  We we given an Achensee Holiday Card by the hotel and so we used them to catch the bus in to town for free and we decided to try the Rofan cable car.  At the top we managed to fit in a lovely walk, some beers and more strudel cake.

We walked back to the hotel a little too late for the pony ride we had booked for Isla (included with the hotel) so we decided to go for more cake with the girls.  That day they were serving Kaiserschmarren with fresh wild cranberry sauce and chocolate sauce along with various home made cakes including some milk chocolate moose filled white chocolate eclairs.  As you can imagine we all stayed a little bit longer on the terrace that afternoon and Isla was very impressed and asked for more ‘chocolate pancakes’ each time until we decided she had probably had enough. After allowing the cakes to settle we all went swimming again to enjoy the good weather before dinner and a few more drinks in the bar.  I thought we were all having a great time until Isla started destroying the playground area off the bar – so we took that as our call for bed.

The next morning we all slept in and had a late breakfast.  Matt took Isla to nursery and then went for a long mountain bike ride alone.  Ella had fallen asleep and so I decided to sit on the terrace with her in the buggy (and a fresh pot of coffee) and relax for a bit before my class. Small pleasures like reading my book seemed such a delicious luxury.

IMG_8422.JPG

The hotel also runs exercise classes for the adults and so I dropped Ella off at nursery before going to my Legs, Bums and Tums class (carefully tailored to include exercises for postpartum mums). After lunch Matt and I went for another bike ride together but in the other direction along the lake.  We decided to try one of the hotel e-bikes this time and they were great fun and it made the long bike rides far more enjoyable. After we collected the girls (and had yet more cake) we went to the soft play and adventure playground once more before dropping the children off at the evening nursery in order to have our final dinner alone.  Unfortunately I started to feel ill and so we all went to bed early (or at least Matt and the girls did – I stayed up late in order to vomit multiple times!).  The hotel is very good with steps in all bathrooms for the little ones to wash their hands and sanitising gel machines dotted around but I suppose there is always the risk that you might catch something unless you are very vigilant.

In the morning Matt took the girls to breakfast to give me more time to recover and to start our packing.  I appreciated the coffee and croissant he brought back to me and I was surprisingly soon feeling a lot better.  We all then continued to pack up (not the easiest with the two girls fighting and playing) but we were able to be checked out by 11am.  Upon check out both girls were given T-shirts, teddies and food packs.  The nursery also sent through lots of pictures of the two girls enjoying themselves in the nursery during the week.  We decided to have lunch on the terrace and a last walk down by the lake before we came home.  It was the Almabtrieb festival and we could see the locals and the vividly dressed cattle making their way along the roads.

We returned the hotel in time for the taxi but unfortunately Isla had an accident during an attempt at a ‘final wee’ before the journey so we had to do some quick cleaning and re-dressing.  At any other hotel this may have been met by confusion or horror but here they were understanding and incredible helpful – just a wave and smile and then any help they could offer. We then all bundled in to the taxi to the airport for our trip home.  Both girls fell fast asleep within minutes of our taxi ride starting and this left us both able to look out the windows and enjoy the incredible scenery on the way to Innsbruck.

Unfortunately Isla was in a difficult mood again at the airport and she kept running away or having meltdowns in the queues.  Thankfully the airport was small and we were soon through and in to the Lounge where she enchanted several fellow passengers with her newly acquired German phrases and enthusiasm for Nutella (on anything including potato salad, sandwiches and fruit).  On the aeroplane home both Isla and Ella were challenging but the cabin crew went out of their way to help us.

IMG_8454

Thankfully we were through Heathrow quickly and our car was sat waiting for us as soon as we came out of the lifts in the car park.  We miraculously managed to fit everything quickly back in to the car and we were soon on our way home.  Both girls were overly tired and, after some screaming and crying, they fell in to a deep sleep as Matt and I looked forward to our own beds that night (and mentally ran through all the washing and unpacking ahead of us).

The Kinderhotel was an absolute gift for any family with children and I am certain that we will return – we are already looking at dates for next year and we cannot wait.

Butlins

We booked a Monday to Friday break at Butlins on one of their “Just for Tots” weeks featuring Mr Bloom. It promised to be a toddler friendly holiday with child friendly activates and meet & greets. We booked in to the Bognor Regis resort and it was easy t find the resort with clear signage to our accommodation and with plenty of parking.

We had booked in to the Shoreline Hotel in one of their family rooms and we were happy with the room. There was a sleeping area for the girls (plus a cot for Ella) with a big blackout curtain in place of a door. Their room had their own wardrobe, draws, night light and TV on the wall. This was the first time Isla would have slept in a bed but thankfully the hotel also provided bed guards to stop her from falling out. The bathroom had a child seat attached to the toilet and a step was provided so that Isla could step up to the toilet and the sink to wash her hands. There were also lovely bright cartoons on the bathroom wall. Our bedroom section had colourful wall decorations for the girls to play with and large floor to ceiling windows overlooking the sea.  Each day the housekeeping staff left towel animals on the bed which Isla loved.

IDPB2695

We were late checking in and so we were advised to go down to dinner in the restaurant by 6pm. When we arrived we found a long queue (something that was to be a recurring theme of the resort) and when we go to the front we were told that you had to book an evening dining slot at breakfast and the only time left was 6.30pm. So we headed out to the play areas to kill time before dinner.

The food was buffet style with a smaller buffet section at toddler height so that the children can choose their own food. Isla loved being able to select her food each day. The food was generally of a good standard and it was possible to eat healthily with lots of vegetables and fruit for Isla.

After dinner we headed up to our room for bath and betimes. Ella went straight to sleep but Isla wanted to sit in bed with her mum and dad as we read her stories – something she was to repeat every night. We all had a good night sleep, the hotel was very quiet and we could hear the waves on the seashore.

In the morning we had more queue for breakfast and eating with the two girls was chaos – I think Isla was overwhelmed by the options and variety of food. The restaurant provided Ella’s Kitchen sachets for free (two per visit) and so we were able to give Ella a nice breakfast too.

We then headed out to explore the resort and went in the main resort tent area.

MCRI3215

We stumbled across the soft play first and Isla spent well over an hour running around. Towards the end it dawned on me that she was actually stuck and repeatedly trying to find her way out and so, after some verbal guidance from me, I managed to get her out just in time for the Teletubbies show on the main stage. Isla was absolutely enthralled and stood, open mouthed, swaying to the characters and music. I can’t be absolutely sure when knew the characters, or what was going on, but she seemed to be enjoying herself. She then went on some of the toddler rides at the Tots Fairground behind the main stage.

IMG_8207

After all the excitement we decided on milkshakes before we all heeded back to the room for our lunchtime sleep.

JFKG8410

A “family nap” was something we were only too happy to add to our daily holiday routine (the blackout curtains in the room worked really well – although a certain someone got the giggles when she realised she could pull the curtains back from her cot to get our attention)

IMG_8257

After lunch we headed over to the fairground to try out some of the bigger rides and slides. Admission to the rides is based on height, rather than age, and so Isla (being a tall two year old) was able to go on almost all rides except for the dodgems. I thought she would be scared but she displayed no hesitation and laughed and screamed the faster and higher the ride went. We went on the Helter Skelter, the Rockin’ Tug boat ride that swirled us around in different directions, the trampolines, the Carousel, and her favourite the Paratrooper – she is turning in to quite the little dare devil. Both girls were tired out by bedtime.

Over the next few days we followed the same pattern of fairground, soft play and exploring the resort.  Isla tried out the Tots football, which she seemed to be very enthusiastic about

IMG_8220IMG_8219IMG_8226IMG_8227

However, after about 10mins and then it descended in to running around followed by her dad. I noticed that a number of the children started to leave early and we were soon amongst their ranks as we decided to cut our losses and take her to the playground again.

We also found the toddler race track area nearby where Isla quickly secured herself one of only two Princess Carriages complete with horse and spent about an hour going around the track – closely followed by Matt who was giddy with excitement and enthusiasm himself.

IMG_8216

We also had a trip down to the beach, which Isla loved. The weather was very good and she ran up and down the pebbles screaming and laughing.

WYDM2901

We tried out the Splash Waterworld which was great as it allowed all four of us to go down a waterslide together die by side.  However, I realised afterwards that I had forgotten to bring our towels and se we spent £2 on a family drying machine which blew hot air at us for 5mins (and didn’t really work).

Isla also discovered her Mother’s love of the 2p amusements and she spent hours (and £s) playing on the 2p sliding machines to try to win prizes.  We weren’t very successful until a fellow mother showed me how to play a trick on some of the machines by depositing multiple 2ps at once to get the pennies to fall quicker.  That woman had skills.

For Ella there was a great soft play just off the main stage and she had an enjoyable few sessions exploring the toys and other children.  I also tried some Baby Yoga.  This was very good with about 12 Mums per class and babies of various ages. We did stretches, sensory play and music. Ella seemed to love it and fell in to s deep sleep about 20mins after the class. I’m definably looking to keep that up as she grows.

IMG_8234

By the end of the week we were tired but the girls seemed to have had a great time, especially Isla.  I am certain that this will not be our last short break to Butlins for the Just for Tots holidays and Isla can’t wait to go back.

Brussels

Wednesday

We were up early on Wednesday due to Ella talking loudly to herself in the next room.  We brought her in to our room while we took it in turns to get ready and finish our packing.

IMG_7517

Eventually we were ready, the buggy was fully laden and the girls were in their seats and in a reasonable mood.

IMG_7518

We made our way over to the train station and caught the train in to London with all the other commuters.  The girls seemed to enjoy themselves as they looked out of the window.

IMG_7521

Once at St Pancras train station we were quickly through check-in and security and in to the lounge to wait the call to our train.  Isla enjoyed the snacks and seemed to be (too) full of energy as she ran up and down the lounge.  Unfortunately Ella got very fidgety and unsettled.

IMG_7524

Once we were called to our train we quickly found our carriage and seats.  Thankfully a very helpful member of staff found us a free table of four seats so we could spread out and settle in for the journey.  I had been saving a Fire tablet (complete with shatter proof screen cover and child proof case) as a surprise for Isla and, as the train pulled out of London, she settled down to enjoy Gruffalo while Matt tried to pacify an increasingly unsettled Ella.

IMG_7525

Soon after we left we were served food and we also fed Ella.

IMG_7527

After everyone had eaten lunch the journey seemed to fly by and we were soon in Brussels.  After some chaos trying to find lifts and platforms we managed to get to central Brussels and we then walked the short distance to our first accommodation.  We did some quick nappy changes and then we went out to find the supermarket to pick up supplies.  On our way back we stopped off to have our first try of Belgium Beer.

IMG_7533

I was very thirsty and I had not appreciated how strong Belgium beer was so, after drinking my beer far too quickly, the alcohol hit home all too fast!  At least it was a quick way to get in to the holiday spirit.  After our beers we went to find a recommended fish restaurant to get some dinner.  I think Isla was hungry and losing her sense of humour.

IMG_7538

We collected our food and made our way back to the accommodation to get the girls their dinner and then ready for bed.  Isla was in the cot provided by the accommodation and Ella was in our pop up cot which we had brought with us.  Thankfully we had a one bedroom apartment with sliding doors to separate the bedroom from the living room area.  Therefore, we were able to put the girls to bed before closing the doors.  Matt and I were then able to have our own dinner.  However, i think Isla was a bit unsettled so we ended up allowing her to come through and sit with us until she got sleepy.

IMG_7540

Onve we had finally got Isla to bed we then had to get ourselves ready for bed in the dark and in silence so as to not wake up the girls.  A new family holiday reality!

Thursday

We were up early again with Ella but we let Isla sleep in before we all had porridge and fruit for breakfast.  Isla was so full of energy she enjoyed playing with her sister

IMG_7544

Isla was also running around the apartment, she seemed to really enjoy opening and closing the sliding bedroom doors.  I think a part of her glee was also having both Matt and I to herself for a change, without household chores and work getting in the way.

After breakfast we packed up and made our way to the Metro for the journey out to Heysel to visit a waterpark.  Public transport was very easy to work out and the trains were frequent and air conditioned.  However, I noticed that Isla went quiet on the train as she was staring at the fellow commuters speaking in a foreign language.  She seems so grown up that it is easy to forget that she is only two years old and this is the first time (that she can remember) she has been exposed to a foreign city and language.  I worried that she may be a bit overwhelmed by it all but she quickly seemed to snap out of it and started to ask questions and relax.

We easily found the water park but we decided to have lunch before going in so we found the cafe and ordered sandwiches while I fed Ella with food we had brought with us.  After lunch we found a family change room and we all got in our swimming costumes and put our bags in the lockers and then we went in to the waterpark.  There was a good section for smaller children with baby slides and fountains of water.  Isla had a fantastic time running around with her new safety jacket giving us peace of mind.  Ella also seemed to take it all in her stride and smiled broadly as we took it in turns to bouncer her around the various connected swimming pools.

Every 20mins or so a buzzer would sound and a wave machine would start up in the main pool area.  The waves were big, the sound effects were of a loud storm and the swimming pool got very crowded with adults and older teenagers.  Isla constantly amazes me by how fearless she is and, after watching the waves for a the first time, she was  quickly asking to go in the waves and requesting that I take her deeper and deeper in to the pool to catch the bigger waves.  Even Ella seemed to enjoy sitting on shoreline of the pool and feeling the waves lapping over her in quick succession.

After a few hours both girls seemed to be closing their eyes and so we thought it was probably time to get showered and dressed to make our way back to the hotel.  Ella very quickly fell fast asleep in the buggy and Isla was looking out of the train window and then suddenly, quite literally in the blink of an eye, she fell fast asleep on my shoulder.  Matt ended up carrying her out of the train and up to our room.

After sleeps and a change of clothes we all got up and went out for a walk to find the Grand Place.  It was stunning and we loved the architecture and history.

IMG_7576

We found lots of chocolate shops (Isla loved the chocolate fountains) and we enjoyed chocolate waffles

We even managed to try another Belgium beer on the way back to the hotel.  Everyone was in a fantastic mood.

IMG_7575

We then made our way back to the hotel for the girl’s dinner, bath time and bed before I made Matt & I a meal and we settled down to watch England Vs. Belgium in the world cup.  We could hear lots of noise around the hotel when Belgium scored!

Friday

We had to be up early this day because we were checking out of one hotel and checking in to another.  Travelling with the girls means that we really need a separate bedroom but, since this was somewhat of a last minute trip, I couldn’t find us anywhere with one bedroom for the full four nights.  So we had to split our stays over two hotels and we needed to be up and packed ready for check out.

We wanted to do a walked tour and that tour started in the Grand Place.  Our new hotel was just off the Grand Place and so we decided that I would get a taxi to the new hotel with the bags and Matt would walk the girls round in the buggy and we would meet in the Grand Place.  As with most of our travelling, we were running late and so I rushed down to ask reception to call me a taxi.  It was at this point that I discovered there was a train strike meant that taxis were going to take an hour – so I decided to call an Uber and hope that I could get the bags in to the car.  In the end it was no problem at all and in no time I was checked in at the new hotel and walking to Grand Place.

I had read about the free tours of Brussels and Viva tours looked particularly well reviewed.  They leave at several times during the day and we aimed for the 11am tour – all I knew was that we needed to look for a orange umbrella.  No sooner had I found the tour leeder and booked us on to the tour (and checked that a double buggy wouldnt cause any issues) than I turned around and Matt was stood next to me with the girls.

The walking tour started with some history of Belgium, Brussels and the Grand Place, including many interesting stories regarding the Town Hall.

After the Grand Place we moved to the monument of Everard t’Serclaes and more interesting sights from a different angle of the town hall.

After this we moved on to Manneken Pis for a quick run down of the history and the obligatory tourist pictures.

At this point Isla started to lose her sense of humour about being in the buggy for so long.  We decided to get her out to let us walk along with us.  This is the point at which the walking tour started to break down for us and Matt had to walk an increasingly bored Isla around.  She also couldn’t keep up with the walking pace and she and Matt started to fall behind.

IMG_7592IMG_7593IMG_7595

At the next stop on the tour we decided to cut our losses and peel off from the tour.  We gave the guide a tip and stopped at her recommended cafe for some Mitraillette – a half baguette filled with a full portion of Belgium fries (which we learnt are twice fried in animal fat), half a tub of mayonnaise and two meatballs.  Isla loved it, Matt devoured his in about 3mins flat (whilst protesting that he was only eating it because he was hungry!) and I fed Ella her lunch (baby food and fruit).

IMG_7599.JPG

We then walked around for a little and re-visited Manneken Pis so that Isla could have some photos taken.  She seemed genuinely interested in the little statue!

We then went back to our hotel.  We had planned to go to a museum that afternoon but the train strike (and our lack of car seats) meant that we had to postpone that visit.  Instead we got the girls down to bed for an afternoon nap whilst Matt and I relaxed in the room and unpacked – I found the perfect spot in the room for the double buggy and the bag of Ella and Isla’s nappies.

After their sleep Ella worked out that she could pull herself up on the cot bars and she seemed to be having a fun time amusing herself with her new skills.

Isla was full of beans and practically bouncing off the walls.  We have been trying to get her interested in some child meditation and so Matt tried to do a quick session with her on the bed.  It seemed to work well as she listened to the calming voice and followed the instructions.

Our room gave us access to the Lounge so we decided to take the girls down to feed them there while Matt and I had some snacks and drinks.  The girls were well behaved and Isla enjoyed trying some new foods.

We took Isla for a little tour of the hotel before we headed out to get some more food for Matt & I.  We found a lovely old man playing music and Isla couldn’t help dancing – it was quite enchanting to watch her.  After a walk in a beautiful little square, and some delightful food we headed back to the room for baths and bedtime.

Saturday

We were up early and down to breakfast in the hotel.  Isla was in her element with a whole buffet of food to choose from.  She immediately spotted the shot glasses at the front counting the special daily smoothies and wanted to try both the mango and the strawberry varieties.  For her breakfast she chose a freshly made waffle with Nutella, yoghurt, hot chocolate and orange juice.  Each time a waitress came to bring her something new she proudly exclaimed “merci beaucoup” to the amusement of the staff and fellow guests.  She was in heaven!  Her sister happily chewed/gummed her way through a variety of pastries and fruit.

After breakfast I took us to the lounge again so that I could get myself a take away coffee.  As I was operating the machine Ella spontaneously projectile vomited all over the floor area in front of the smaller breakfast buffet and even managed to cover her Dad with some.  Nice.

We cleared up the best we could and sheepishly made our way back up to our room to get ready for the day.  We decided to walk to the museum because the train strike was still ongoing.  It was a lovely 25min walk in the sunshine and the route took us via the Royal Palace and gardens.

Our route also took us past the European Parliament which was very interesting to see.

We chose to visit the museum because they have a large collection of dinosaurs and when we arrived there was a big dinosaur outside – Isla immediately wanted to get out of the buggy and have her photo taken.  She was really excited.

When we got in to the museum Isla was almost unstoppable with excitement and poor Matt spent most of the time running around after her (closely followed by a museum attendant presumable worried about the integrity of the exhibits with a charging toddler on the loose!).  This gave me some time to look at the exhibits which were amazing.

After a fantastic few hours in the museum we visited the gift shop and Isla picked out a toy dinosaur she wanted (and I don’t think she put down for the rest of the holiday). We then walked home in the sunshine and the girls fell fast asleep.

We went to the lounge again to feed the girls before we headed back up to the room for bath time.

We then got the girls in to their pyjamas and decided to try to go out to the lovely square behind the hotel for a final drink in the sunshine on our last night of the holiday.  We found a table in the shade, Matt ordered a beer and I decided to try a beer flight.

The buggy and shade worked well for Ella who fell straight to sleep but Isla refused to play ball and go to sleep.

When Isla eventually woke Ella up I decided to pacify them both with an ice cream (Isla) and a churros (Ella) while we finished our drinks.

We then made our way back to our room to get the girls down to sleep after a lovely day together.

Sunday

After another messy but enjoyable breakfast at the hotel buffet we covered everyone in suncream (Isla remains unimpressed by the suncream process) and we headed out for a final stroll around the city.

We stopped again in the Grand Place.

And we wondered the cobbled streets buying some chocolates and watercolours to remind us of our time here.

IMG_7858

We stopped off to pick up some gorgeous baguette sandwiches for lunch and when we checked back in the buggy the girls had both called fast asleep.

We went back to the lounge to eat our lunch and then we went back to the room to pack up our things (and both girls back in the buggy) before we checked out.

Our hotel was opposite the Brussels Central station and thankfully we were only one short stop away from Brussels Midi station to catch the Eurostar home.

It was our first holiday as a family of four and we had a wonderful time.  Although it can be challenging and tiring looking after the two girls, the time we get to spend together is magical.  I cannot wait for Isla to be old enough to start to remember our trips together.
